Founded in 1835, Independence is a town rich in history. For starters, Independence is the homesite of Baylor University—and Sam Houston and his family lived here in the 1850s.

We invite you to come to Independence and visit Old Baylor Park,
walk the village loop, and learn about early Texas history, Sam Houston, pioneer homes,
historic churches, old plantations, and more.

A visit to Independence is a visit with Texas history—
and probably, a history you haven’t known.
